The Problem:
Vacant buildings and empty lots have sat untouched in our ANC for years, including the apartment complex at 801 Rd. Island Ave. and several empty storefronts along 7th Street. These properties aren't just missed opportunities for housing and local business. They breed the same neglect, safety concerns, ratsand conditions that wear down how safe and proud people feel on their own block. Given the current housing crisis, every one of these sites represents housing or storefronts we don't have, and years of inaction we can't afford to keep repeating.
What I'll Do:
An ANC commissioner can't force an owner to build, but I can keep the pressure on. I'll push zoning recommendations, weigh in on permit requests, and work with the city and DC agencies to enforce whatever accountability measures are available for owners who leave properties sitting empty. I'll also build close working relationships with neighboring ANCs, since these properties and their impact don't stop at our boundary lines, and a cohesive push across ANCs is stronger than one commission acting alone.
The Problem:
Too many of our neighbors tell me they don't feel safe walking through parts of our neighborhood, especially at night, while day to day it can feel like nothing is changing. Safety isn't just about policing. It's about whether families feel comfortable letting their kids walk to school, whether people feel at ease walking home alone, and whether the resources that actually address root causes, not just symptoms, are present in our community.
What I'll Do:
I'll push for MPD to have the resources and presence our area actually needs, while also working alongside community-based organizations like HIPS and other local harm reduction and outreach groups to make sure people struggling with addiction or homelessness are met with real support, not just left unaddressed. Public safety and community care aren't separate goals. I'll advocate for both together, because a genuinely safe neighborhood needs accountability and opportunity working side by side.
The Problem:
Too many residents don't know the ANC exists, what it does, or that it's meant to represent them directly. That disconnect means decisions get made without the input of the very people they affect most, and it means a lot of neighbors don't even know they have a direct line to someone whose job is to advocate for them.
What I'll Do:
I plan to go door to door across our SMD and make sure every household knows my name and my role, backed by a simple online portal where residents can share concerns, feedback, or praise directly with me, anonymously or with contact info if they'd like to hear back. My goal is to make sure the ANC isn't a mystery to anyone in 2G01, but a resource every resident knows is there for them, year-round, not just at election time.
“Yes, we can.”
